end of the trail

my mother is reality impaired, and you never know facy from fiction if it came out of her mouth. She said that Trail got its name froma sign that said end of the trail. Anyone hear of this?

    I don't know.

    Did Trail exist before the smelter was built?

    Did the smelter exist before F. Augustus Heinze arrived in Trail?

    I was thinking that perhaps, after the drubbing the Heinze took at the hands of Standard Oil, maybe he chose the mining country of B. C. as his last chance. His 'end of the trail'.

    Just a thought.
